County is a county located in the U.S. state of Missouri. As of 2000, the
population is 16,492. Its county seat is Savannah. The county was organized in
1841 and named for lawyer Andrew Jackson Davis. The county along with Buchanan
and DeKalb counties in Missouri and Doniphan County, Kansas is included in the
St. Joseph Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has an estimated population of
122,934 in the year 2003.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,131 km˛ (436 mi˛). 1,127 km˛ (435 mi˛) of it is land and 3 km˛ (1 mi˛) of it (0.30%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 16,492 people, 6,273 households, and 4,635 families residing in the county. The population density was 15/km˛ (38/mi˛). There were 6,662 housing units at an average density of 6/km˛ (15/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county was 98.38% White, 0.42% Black or African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 6,273 households out of which 34.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.70% were married couples living together, 7.40% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.10% were non-families. 22.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.50% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the county the population was spread out with 26.40% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 14.40% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.00 males.
